UGAstro PC's: Configuration
There are two 'sets' of PC's used by the UGAstro laboratory
courses. One set lives up in 705, and the other, out at Leuschner
Observatory. This page will tell you a bit about PC's at both
locations.
Of the PC's we have, most run under Linux and a few run under Windows
2000. Those under Linux tens to be set up the same way for data
acquisition purposes. They run a server with the same name as
their hostname (e.g. the machine known as pulsar that is on
the ugastro cluster, runs a server program named pulsar).
The PC server software controls all the DAQ stuff associated with that
particular PC, and communicates with the local 705 lab Sparcs,
via UNIX TCP/IP sockets.
startnet (Linux PC's ONLY):
The startnet script is tailored for each PC to first kill off
any
running servers, then to fire up the servers and send their
output to the file startnet.log.
Source Code
All the server code is written in C++ and compiled by
the GNU gcc.
Acknowledgements
The specialized drivers for Linux were taken from many
sources for which we are grateful:
- The driver for the Oregon
Microsystems motor
controller (PC58) was cleverly written by Tony Denault.
- The driver for the Measurement Computing
DAS-4020/16 card was written and is graciously supported by Warren
Jasper.
- Drivers for the TTL I/O were written by Dick Treffers.
- Drivers for the Keithley AWFG were written by Dick Treffers.
