tserver, startnet, stopnet

The thirty inch telescope is run by a series of computers all communicating via the program tserver. The computer armin (aka fast, leuschner) acts as the switching yard and directs the appropriate tx commands to the correct computer and port. The other computers connected to armin are: ircam (controls the infrared camera), zeos (controls the SETI photometer), and crystalize (controls the telescope and filter wheel).

Starting the tserver

Follow this script if you need to restart or reset the tserver. Also follow this script if you change which computers are communicating with armin.

  1. Close down existing instances of tserver by running stopnet (see below).
  2. Log into the computers that are currently connected and run the command startnet from the command line. You should do this for every computer you (or others) expect to use; this includes crystalize (to control the telescope).
  3. Log into armin (or return to armin) and edit the file startnet in the home directory. You should comment-out and uncomment the appropriate line of the file for the collection of computers connected to the network. The line should begin "set SERVER=".
  4. Run startnet from the command line on armin.

Stopping the tserver

Log into every machine that is connected (see list above) and run stopnet, including armin.
